Seeing as how every aspect of modern American life is shaped by capitalism, the pursuit of wealth and the authority of (Your Boss’ name here), it is not surprising that some of the specialized jargon of capitalists has spilled over into mainstream language. Hence you’ll find non-degree holding individuals bandying phrases like “hostile takeover”, “overhead” or even “bear market” without the slightest indication of what they’re saying. Conversely, the livelihood of the average manager-type person is conveying his needs and orders to the labor force in as relatively normal speech as possible and to this end, some genius in the research division of some monopolistic multi-national corporation devised a brilliant, practical tool to get employess to work for next to nothing while offering them some mangled shred of dignity on which to hang there short, brutal lives. Call it: the Corporate “We”.
