Weird Corporate Behavior Mar.04.2006
It all started just before Christmas when an armed police officer barred my spouse, a 40-year-old sociology professor, from leaving the Regal Elmwood Theater. If she wanted to continue walking the 10 yards to the exit door, the officer informed her, she would have to pull down her hood until she was outside. Or she could be arrested. Of course the pulling down the hood part goes against everything our mothers taught us about winter attire—that we put on our mittens and hoods before we go out into the cold. But the man giving the order had a gun and represented the power of the state.

Extreme Hypocrisy: The Sex Lives of Republicans In early November of 2004 I wrote about George W. Bush's first post-reelection appointment - his selection of anti-abortion activist Dr. W. David Hager to head the FDA's Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. This was the same Dr. Hager who wrote that women suffering from PMS need only to turn to the bible for help. In his private practice he refused to prescribe birth control medication to unmarried women. As a Republican political activist Hager opposed the sale of birth control drugs he identified as abortifacients. In essence, by putting an avowed opponent of reproductive health in charge of reproductive health drugs, Bush followed suit on his four-year track record of putting wolves in charge of hen houses.

Welfare to Wal-Mart Americans are junkies. We're addicted to consumerism. We're addicted to things--and China is our main supplier. China is the man. In 2004, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, we imported a whopping $197 billion worth of goods from China, and exported $35 billion worth of goods to them, chalking up an I.O.U. for $161 billion in the process. China is the main supplier feeding our consumer habit, but Wal-Mart, according to the Congressional Committee on Education and the Workforce, is China's biggest street pusher, responsible for slinging up to one eighth of the Chinese goods sold in the United States. If Wal-Mart were a country, it would be China's seventh largest trade partner.
Eighty percent of the more than 6,000 factories supplying Wal-Mart merchandise are located in China. This reality is shocking to Americans who've bought in to Wal-Mart's "All American" corporate persona. Thanks in large part to Wal-Mart, whose sales make up a full two percent of the United States' Gross Domestic Product, China's U.S, dollar reserves are estimated to be approaching a half trillion dollars. Bombing Our Way to Hell Thanksgiving is usually time for my annual rant against our seasonal dive into the abyss of hedonistic consumerism. Friday is my favorite holiday - Buy Nothing Day! I usually write a story or two and do a few radio interviews about fetishistic consumption, obsessive compulsive shopping and apocalyptic materialism in the face of environmental holocaust, national and personal economic ruin, and most annoying of all - boring consumption-oriented conversation. And I try to make a joke or two - maybe about the annual slaughter of Christmas trees.
But not this year. This isn't time for business or business disruption-as-usual. This is shaping up to be a particularly bloody holiday season - and the blood is on our collective hands.

Scandal Fatigue If the Bush administration and their backers around the country have proven themselves adept at anything, it’s their proclivity for creating outrageous scandals. Initially, this band of shameless clowns seemed to be making journalism quite easy, providing a steady stream of moral and ethical transgressions to report on – so much so that there’ve been ample scoops to go around, which each of us in the alternative press focusing on a different Republican outrage each week. The problem is that it’s now three years later, and the stories just keep on coming faster and faster, leaving us little time to give them the coverage that they each deserve, while keeping us from covering our old beats, whatever they were. Bush Strikes Out in Haiti The Boston Globe article begins like this: "Thousands of Demonstrators chanting anti-American slogans encircled the US Marine-occupied National Palace here yesterday ." Reuters news service cites protestors exclaiming, "We're going to burn down the palace with the Americans inside. We have weapons and we are ready to fight." Knight Ridder news service reports that 5,000 protestors marched on the national palace "shouting anti-Bush slogans" and protesting the US occupation of their country. (Mar.17.2004)

Primary Tales from the Crypt One hundred and twenty thousand Midwesterners from the second whitest state in the union caucused two weeks ago, and if we’re to believe the media spin, the earth has trembled. When the dust finally settled – and there’s a lot of dust in Iowa – former Democratic frontrunner, Howard Dean was reduced to a mumbling fool, with Johns Kerry and Edward rising to take his place. Dick Gephardt, who finished a distant fourth, dropped out of the race. Iowa has spoken.
I can’t help but think the media is placing a little too much credence on what Iowans think. First off, the Iowa debate was quite a bit skewed to a few rather bizarre Iowa-specific topics, mostly regarding corn. Hence, gasohol subsidies played a uniquely large role in determining the Iowa outcome. Topics important to other Americans, like, say, mass transportation or even fisheries, held no importance in Iowa.

Our Brave New World of Voting Back in August I wrote about America’s ongoing “soft coup” – arguing that military and intelligence community brass were turning against the Bush posse en masse. My theory was based on the fact that the strongest exposes written about the Bush administration last summer all cited former military and CIA officials as their primary sources. This trend has continued unabated, with current officials in Langley and the Pentagon joining their retired comrades on the Bush-bashing bandwagon. New stories come out daily about hawks and spooks defecting to the tofu brigade and telling all about how the Bush team misled the American people and plunged the nation into a needless war. And the formerly compliant media has deviated from the Bush administration script, bringing the military’s anti-Bush message right into America’s TV viewing pens.
